Suspect seriously hurt in officer-involved shooting in DeKalb

This is what we know.

A suspect has been left seriously wounded after being shot by a DeKalb County Police Officer.

It happened Monday night at the Mountain Crest Apartments at 1075 North Hairston Rd.

According to DeKalb County Chief of Police James Conroy, earlier in the evening around 7:30, DeKalb County Sheriff's Deputy responded to a Chevron gas station for reports of a suspicious person.

As he was talking to the suspect, the deputy reportedly got into an altercation him. A DeKalb County Police officer pulled into the parking lot to help, but that's when the suspect ran away.

The deputy and police officer chased the suspect into the nearby apartment complex, where the suspect reportedly produced a weapon.

At that point, both officers commanded the suspect to drop the gun, but he reportedly refused to comply. That's when the DeKalb County Police Officer fired his weapon, hitting the suspect, though they aren't sure at this time where he was shot.

EMS transported the suspect to the hospital. The officer only sustained minor injuries.

Right now, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called out to the scene to investigate. A weapon was recovered from the scene.

Investigators don't believe they are looking for anyone else connected to the incident.

Meanwhile, the police officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard with officer-involved shootings.

No other information was available, but anyone with more details connected to the case is asked to contact the GBI.
