Underground tunnels hid $200,000 in stolen goods at SC home

GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. — On the surface, this Greenville County man seems completely innocent. But when you look underground, deputies say it's a different story.

Over $200,000 worth of stolen property was found hidden in what deputies call a "sophisticated network of underground tunnels," and they 26-year-old Timothy Glenn Painter is responsible.

Several tips lead deputies to the 4-acre property at 617 Looperville Road in Piedmont, where a two-day search revealed several big ticket items. Heavy construction equipment, transport trailers, vehicles, power tools and construction material were seized — all from the underground tunnels.

Painter reportedly performed burglaries around the state, including the Midlands, then stashed the items at his home. Deputies are currently trying to return all of the property.

He was arrested Tuesday and is being held on a $133,400 bond at the Greenville County Detention Center for eight counts of receiving stolen goods and one count of grand larceny.
