UNION CITY, Ga. — A Union City police officer and at least one other driver were taken to the hospital on Tuesday after an accident on I-85.

The crash happened along the northbound lanes in Union City when a failed lane change escalated into a three-vehicle accident.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a Union City officer was responding to a broken down vehicle in the emergency lane near a concrete barrier on the interstate when a chain reaction of events occurred.

First, an SUV traveling in the far left lane attempted to change lanes and hit a van in the process. Preliminary information suggests the van driver lost control and the vehicle rotated and then hit a guardrail.

The SUV that initially attempted the lane change then hit the patrol car before hitting the concrete wall.

Both the officer and the driver of the SUV were taken to the hospital after complaining of injuries. Initial reports made no mention of injuries sustained by the driver of the van or if any of the vehicles involved also had passengers.

While neither the SUV driver nor the officer was named, a GSP spokesperson wrote that charges were pending for the SUV driver.
