Family of worker killed in Mercedes-Benz Stadium construction seeking $100 million in lawsuit

Sonny Rogers was hospitalized for three years after a July 2015 accident.

ATLANTA -- The family of a construction worker who was killed during the construction of Mercedes-Benz Stadium hopes to have their day in court in less than a year.

Sonny Rogers was hospitalized for three years after an accident on July 1, 2015. He died on July 18, 2018.

Rogers' family has filed a lawsuit against HHRM Self-Perform, LLC, and several other construction companies, for the accident.

According to the lawsuit, Rogers and other workers were directed to move a 42-foot-high metal shoring tower by using a fork lift, rather than properly dismantling the tower.

On Thursday, the family and their attorney announced they were seeking $100 million in damages.

The lawsuit points out that the people in charge knew or should have known the shoring tower manufacturer called for dismantling the shoring tower in the reverse method in which it was erected, thereby necessitating dismantling the tower from the top to the bottom.
