Firefighters rescue man who ran into burning house in northwest Atlanta

When firefighters arrived, the unidentified man was on the porch, tossing items from inside onto the front lawn.

One man was overcome by smoke after he ran back into a burning home early Saturday morning in a northwest Atlanta neighborhood, fire officials said.

According to Atlanta Fire Battalion Chief Sean Johnson, the fire happened at a home in the 800 block of Skipper Drive shortly after 5 a.m. When fire crews arrived, they found a man standing on the porch of the burning home throwing items from inside onto the front lawn.

Atlanta police officers had been previously called to the address for a domestic call.

Atlanta Police Sgt. John Chafee said the man was seen throwing a microwave oven into the street.

Once firefighters began to battle the blaze, the man ran from the porch back into the home. Johnson said the man was overcome by smoke and was brought out of the house by firefighters.

The man was subsequently taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and burns. He was listed in stable condition early Saturday afternoon.

His identity has not been released. No other injuries were reported.

Johnson said that through the efforts of firefighters, the house was saved. He said that the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Chafee said it appears that the home belongs to the man, but it was not clear as to why he re-entered the burning house.
