T.I. on school accused of sending student home because of her hair: 'A true disgrace'

The girl's family said she was sent home because of her hair.

ATLANTA — Video of a young girl crying at her school in Louisiana is gaining more traction on Instagram, after Atlanta rapper and activist T.I. weighed in on the school policy that brought her to tears.

The video was filmed Monday at Christ the King Elementary school in Louisiana.

The girl's family said she was sent home because of her hair. According to the school's handbook for this year, children can only wear their hair naturally - no extensions, wigs or hair pieces.

T.I. shared the video on Instagram, calling the school deplorable, writing that the girl's hair is "perfectly fine, unless of course you have an issue with black people's hair in general."

"Christ the King school in Gretna, La. You are deplorable!!! A true disgrace to the very thing your school’s name says it represents," the rapper wrote. "How do you feel that this is a proper representation of what Jesus Christ the King & how he would want us to treat our children? You should be ashamed of yourselves."

The girl's parents said they weren't aware of the policy change, but the superintendent said the school notified parents over the summer, and again on the the first day of school earlier this month.

The parents are still considering filing a lawsuit against the school.

This isn't the first incident like this that has drawn frustration. Last week, a private school in Florida reportedly turned away a 6-year-old on his first day of class because of his dreadlocks.

The boy's father said he was aware the school required a uniform, but was never told the dress code prohibits dreadlocks.
