SAVANNAH, Ga. — Dozens of Georgia National Guard troops began making their early returns from Afghanistan on Monday morning, Gov. Brian Kemp tweeted.
Hundreds of Georgia troops will be coming home early over the next few weeks. It was announced earlier this month that members of Georgia’s 48th Infantry Brigade of the National Guard would be returning ahead of schedule.
The brigade, based out of Macon, had about 2,000 troops in Afghanistan.
Kemp tweeted early Monday that he was “honored to be at Hunter Army Airfield this morning to welcome home the first flight of the @GeorgiaGuard 48th Brigade from Afghanistan.”
“Welcome home!” the governor added.
Hunter Army Airfield is located in Savannah.
The Georgia National Guard also tweeted photos of troops meeting the governor as they stepped off the plane.
According to the Georgia National Guard, the troops had served a nine-month deployment in Afghanistan as part of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel and NATO Operation Resolute Support.
