Pedestrian killed on I-20 near Downtown Connector bringing traffic to standstill

Eastbound I-20 is showing heavy congestion after a pedestrian was apparently hit by several cars on the interstate overnight.

The accident apparently happened in the area of eastbound I-20 just to the east of the Downtown Connector. HERO units on the scene reported the fatality and that the victim appears to have been hit by more than one vehicle.

It's unclear why the victim was on the interstate at the time of the crash, however, Georgia Department of Transportation crews, Atlanta police detectives, and the medical examiner are all on the scene. The scene isn't expected clear before 3 a.m.

The main eastbound lanes, multiple onramps, and exit ramps are closed during the investigation. Georgia Department of Transportation maps also show accidents on the west side of the connector and northbound on the connector itself that aren't expected clear until at least 2 a.m.

Drivers should avoid the area - especially eastbound I-20 in the middle of Atlanta - until the accident is cleared.
