64,000 voters have cast early ballots on new voting machines

According to the office, 64,074 Georgians have voted in person, so far, during this early voting period.

ATLANTA — In just three days of early voting, more than 64,000 Georgians have voted in person on the state's new voting system, as of Wednesday, according to numbers from the Secretary of State's Office.

“Georgia’s new secure and reliable paper-ballot system has helped expand voting access to all Georgians, and to those with disabilities in particular," said Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

According to their office, 64,074 Georgians have voted in person, during this early voting period for the March 24 primary for the 2020 presidential election.

Of those, 21,844 were cast in the Republican primary, while 41,973 were cast in the Democratic primary. Another 257 nonpartisan ballots were cast in person. The highest turnout was in Fulton County (10,010 votes), followed by DeKalb (5,770 votes) and Cobb (3,971 votes).

Earlier this week, the new paper-ballot voting system saw "another flawless success," according to the Secretary of State's Office, in the March 3 runoff for the special election for the District 13 Senate seat. The results of the special election, held back on Feb. 4, were confirmed by an audit.

"There were no errors in the runoff election," which saw more than 12,000 votes cast on the new voting system, according to the office.

But the new voting machines have not come without their fair share of scrutiny. Several critics have claimed that the large, electronic screens are not discreet enough to protect a voter's right to cast a secret ballot. And at least one voting district - in Athens - has said outright that they are not going to use the new machines.

The Secretary of State's Office tried to offer one solution to the complaint by purchasing voting "cabinets," but some have challenged that solution, claiming it makes the machines vulnerable to hackers.

Early voting ends March 20.
