Former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn endorses Bourdeaux for 7th Congressional District seat

During her 2018 run, Carolyn Bourdeaux only lost the 7th Congressional District seat by 419 votes.

ATLANTA — Former Democratic U.S. Senator Sam Nunn has announced he is supporting former Georgia state representative Carolyn Bourdeaux in her second run for the 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House.

Bourdeaux, the 7th District Democratic nominee in 2018, came within a hair's breadth of winning that district in the last race, losing by only 419 votes against four-term Republican incumbent Rob Woodall.

Following his victory, Woodall announced in February 2019 that he would not be seeking another term in Congress, leaving the field wide open for the 2020 race. As of this point, at least five other Democrats and nine Republicans have made announcements about running for the seat.

"I applaud your determination to bring your ideas, your energy and your values to the governance arena. Washington needs leaders with fresh ideas who reject the hyper-partisan environment - in which many campaigns - in one way or another curse the darkness rather than light a candle," Nunn said.

Georgia has been considered a swing state for the upcoming 2020 election, which was demonstrated to no small effect during the 2018 election cycle.

Nunn served 24 years as a U.S. Senator from Georgia, with the final eight years of those as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

He was long considered to be one of the leading experts on Capitol Hill when it came to national security and foreign policy.

After his retirement from the Senate in 1997, Nunn, together with Ted Turner, formed the Nuclear Threat Initiative, geared toward reducing the threat of nuclear terrorism.

“We are building a broad coalition here in Georgia’s 7th District, and I look forward to continuing the fight to reform our health care system and improve our schools," Bourdeaux said.

Nunn's support comes on top of other notable Georgia residents who have endorsed Bourdeaux's bid, including current U.S. representatives John Lewis (D-5th) and Hank Johnson (D-4th), former Ambassador Andrew Young, former Gov. Roy Barnes, former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland, and former Democratic Congressional nominee in the 6th District, Jon Ossoff.

The 7th Congressional District covers portions of Gwinnett, Forsyth, Barrow, Walton and Newton counties.
