WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — The historic vote to formalize the House impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump went along party lines for Georgia lawmakers.
All five Georgia Democrats voted for the proceedings. Eight of the nine Georgia Republicans voted against.
Rep. Jody Hice of Monroe didn't vote due to a family emergency.
However, on social media he called the process a witch hunt.
"This is a travesty! No one should vote for this," said Rep. Doug Collins.
The Gainesville Republican was the only member of the Georgia delegation to speak on the House floor Thursday.
As the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, and an outspoken critic of the impeachment inquiry, Collins is expected to be a leading voice in the coming weeks.
"Substance will always win out in the end. And this President has nothing to worry about," Collins said.
None of the five Georgia Democrats spoke on the house floor.
Rep. Hank Johnson spoke with reporters outside the capitol building.
"It's a historic vote that signifies our seriousness about protecting our democracy and securing the liberties that the framers of our Constitution intended for the people," the Lithonia Democrat said.
In the Georgia sixth district, there's a Twitter battle between Rep. Lucy McBath and the woman she beat last year, Karen Handel.
Each of them are using the other as ammunition to fund raise and galvanize the troops.
"I'm already being attacked for my vote today in support of the impeachment inquiry," McBath tweeted. "Handel has called me crazy and said impeachment is a scam."
She included a link to donate to her campaign.
"Hey (Lucy McBath) you know what's really crazy?" Handel responded on Twitter, "telling the voters back here in GA that you're independent and against impeachment but then voting for it and raising money off of it in DC."
Handel followed with a donation link of her own.
