ATLANTA - A new Facebook data center is coming to Georgia, Gov. Nathan Deal announced Wednesday afternoon.

The center will be located in Social Circle and will employ more than 100 workers. Facebook executives said the company will invest $750 million in the area. The plant will span about one million square feet.

Deal was joined by U.S. Rep. Jody Hice, whose district includes Social Circle, as well as Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner Pat Wilson and other business executives.

The announcement comes in the wake of a major, $5 billion tax relief package that Deal signed late last week. Georgia officials are also awaiting Amazon's decision as to where it will locate its second global headquarters. Metro Atlanta is considered a strong candidate for the development.

Facebook said the data center "will be part of the valuable infrastructure that helps bring Facebook apps and services to more than 2 billion people across the globe."

Social Circle will be Facebook’s 12th data center, and ninth in the United States.

“Our global economic team for the department of economic development for last year gave me a statistic that I think is rather impressive, that 80 percent of those projects rural Georgia, outside of the metropolitan area of Atlanta,” Deal said.

The data center will run on 100 percent renewal energy. Facebook expects to finish construction by 2020.
