School bus driver buys hats and gloves for students in need

A school bus driver immediately stepped in to help a student when he noticed the boy’s freezing cold hands and ears.

John Lunceford is a bus driver for the Kennewick School District.

KENNEWICK, Wash. – A school bus driver immediately stepped in to help a student when he noticed the boy’s freezing cold hands and ears.

The young boy boarded John Lunceford’s bus after waiting at the bus stop in freezing temperatures without gloves or a hat.

“I put my gloves on him and told him ‘It’ll be OK, it’ll be OK,’” said Lunceford.

Lunceford is a U.S. Army veteran now in his third year driving buses for the Kennewick School District.

Upon dropping students off at school, Lunceford went to the dollar store. He bought ten hats and ten sets of gloves, in both black and pink, then headed back to the school.

Lunceford did not know the name of the student he helped, but an administrator helped track down the young boy. He was in the library with his class when Lunceford hand-delivered a new hat and pair of gloves to him.

“I’m a grandfather you know?” Lunceford said. “No one wants a kid to suffer like that.”

Another little girl went up to Lunceford saying she did not have a hat. You can bet that Lunceford took care of her.
