Lawrenceville students sign on for valuable summer internships

Summer of Impact is an initiative to create internships for students living in Lawrenceville.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — It was "Signing Day" for many students at Central Gwinnett High School on Tuesday. 18 students committed to summer internship opportunities from local organizations and businesses during the Summer of Impact internship program in Lawrenceville.

The City of Lawrenceville and Impact 46 partnered with Discovery High School and Central Gwinnett to offer students high-demand internships for the summer.

The program is entering its second year and the organization reports that the number of students participating this year has nearly doubled.

"What we wanted to do was create an internship where high school juniors and seniors can gain real work experience which supports what they are already doing and learning," Impact 46 Executive Director Judy Young said.

Impact 46 selected 61 students to attend a work development workshop, from that group 18 students were then chosen to go through the job interview process, many students experiencing it for the first time.

Steven Tam, a graduating senior from Discovery High School wants to become an electrical engineer. This summer he will be interning with the City of Lawrenceville to gain more knowledge and real-world experience about the career path.

"I am really excited because I'm not just going to be sitting to the side watching them. I am actually going to be on the field working with them," Tam said.

This fall, Tam will attend Kennesaw State University and believes his internship will prepare him for the upcoming studies.

Participating businesses and organizations that will be accepting student interns this summer include The Aurora Theatre, City of Lawrenceville, Impact46/Path Project, Peach State Federal Credit Union, PureFun and Shuma Sports.
