Group finds human remains while tearing down funeral home shed

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says they have the remains of three unidentified people and an explanation from the funeral home.

METTER, Ga. — State agents are investigating after a recycling center received human remains from a group allegedly clearing out a funeral home shed.

The Candler County Sheriff's Office called out the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Friday when they were contacted by Scrap Partners Recycling in Metter.

There, they told detectives that a group had been hired by a funeral home to tear down a shed and found two metal containers and one casket in the process.  However, as the items were being unloaded, one opened revealing ribs and a skull.

GBI specialists have since examined the contents of the containers and determined that they contain three different sets of remains. One owner of the funeral home later admitted to putting the bodies in the shed in the late 80s or early 90s.

Preliminary information suggests the bodies were being stored until they had been claimed - or until arrangements had been made by family members.

GBI Crime Lab specialists will now conduct an examination of the remains to try and determine their identities. That process is scheduled for Jan. 2, 2019.
