Why does Peachtree suddenly change names?

ATLANTA -- Perhaps you've taken a drive through Buckhead, or mailed a package to a business on Atlanta's most iconic street, only to encounter a name change that leaves you wondering.

Why does Peachtree suddenly change from Street to Road?

It happens about a half-mile north of the spot where Midtown changes to Buckhead.

11Alive's Why Guy did some digging that began with business owners near the spot of the name change.

"I just call it Peachtree," said the owner of Sherlock's Wine Merchant. "I try not to lend to the confusion."

At the Atlanta History Center, Helen Matthews says in the early 1900's, Peachtree changed names at what was then the city limits.

"In the 1912 city directory, beyond the city limits it's just a road," says Matthews. "Peachtree Road was going out into the country from the city where it was Street."

Over 100 years later, the name change remains.
