Woman killed in northwest Atlanta shooting early Sunday

According to Atlanta Police, a witness said the victim had been in a verbal altercation with four other people when she pulled out a small gun and fired it into the air.

ATLANTA -- A woman was killed in a shooting in northwest Atlanta early Sunday morning.

According to Atlanta Police Capt. Reginald Moorman with the Major Crimes division, just before 2 am, officers were near the intersection of Donald Lee Hollowell and Woods Drive on a traffic stop.

During the traffic stop, the officers said they heard gunshots coming from a home in the 700 block of Woods Drive.

Moorman said that the officers investigated the gunshots and found a 36-year-old black woman who had been shot several times. Moorman said she was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta where she died as a result of her injuries.

According to Atlanta Police Officer Stephanie Brown, a witness at the scene says the victim got into a verbal altercation with two males and two females.

During the argument, Brown said, the victim pulled a small gun from her pocket and fired into the air.

Brown says the witness said he walked away at that point, but a short time later, he says he heard more gunshots and looked back to see the victim on the ground and one of the males limping away.

Brown says at this point, police are calling this a death investigation.
