Brigid Kosgei wins elite women's race in record-breaking AJC Peachtree Road Race

She was the third record-breaker of the morning.

ATLANTA — Brigid Kosgei set an event record in a neck-and-neck finish to win the elite women’s division race on Thursday in the 50th running of the AJC Peachtree Road Race.

The Kenyan runner finished in 30 minutes 22 seconds, just barely edging Agnes Tirop. The two jostled for position down the final stretch in as close a finish as they come.

Kosgei wins $50,000 for setting the record.

The 25-year-old is in the midst of an unbeatable run – she literally hasn’t lost a race since last September. That stretch includes victories in the 2018 Chicago Marathon and 2019 London Marathon.

She said the course was a “little tougher” because of the humidity but said she was able to tackle the course “okay.”

Kosgei also said she hoped to be back next year.

“I want to say thanks again for inviting to me to this race and I hope next year you will invite me,” she said.

The previous record-holder, Lornah Kiplagat, congratulated Kosgei on Twitter.

"It took 17 years but my record is finally broken at #PeachtreeRoadRace !" Kiplagat wrote. "Hats off for Brigid Kosgei!"
