ATLANTA--Onward and upward?

UGA might have the first part of that time-tested rallying cry down pat, after demolishing its first two opponents by an average final score of 43-9.

However, the 'upward' part has been difficult to negotiate, given how the Dawgs haven't been able to usurp college football's last two College Football Playoff champions.

At least, not yet.

For the third consecutive voting period, UGA stands third overall in the USATODAY/Amway Coaches poll, again trailing top-ranked Alabama and No. 2 Clemson.

Among the notable highlights of this week's poll:

a) Alabama, which travels to Ole Miss this weekend, commandeered 59 of the 63 first-place votes, with Clemson (three) and Ohio State (one) earning the others.

b) For total votes at the top, it's Alabama (1,571 votes), Clemson (1,481) and UGA (1,437).

c) The SEC, Big Ten and Pac-12 each produced five different schools for this countdown.

d) Oklahoma State was the Top 25's biggest riser (up four spots) ... whereas Michigan State plunged 11 spots to No. 24.

e) Speaking of which, Arizona State knocked off MSU late Saturday night ... and yet, the Spartans still rank one slot higher.

Go figure.
