ATLANTA -- Greater Atlanta Christian quarterback Davis Mills left the 3A state championship game against Cedar Grove during the first quarter after taking a gruesome hit.
Mills, the No. 1 quarterback from the Class of 2017 in Georgia according to Rivals.com, was running towards the sideline when Jadon Haselwood hit Mills in the head using his shoulder, causing Mills' head to snap back.
Mills stood up after the play, but he immediately fell back down. He was helped off the field by trainers, who worked on his left knee, which buckled under him during the hit.
Mills was helped to the locker room. He returned with his pads still on, but with an ice pack wrapped around his left knee. Someone walking next to Mills gave the crowd a thumbs up.
Jonathan Rose entered Friday's game for the injured Mills.
Mills is committed to Stanford. He missed the first two games of the season because of a knee injury. The Spartans won both those games.

Several fans were upset that a flag for targeting was not thrown.
.@11AliveSports @GACSpartans @GPBsports What a cheap shot. #15 should've been ejected

It amazes me that officials worry so much about sideline warnings and knee pads and talking in earpieces but let this stuff go with no flag. https://t.co/PzIbCYbB2r

Explain why this wasn't a flag @OfficialGHSA? That's pretty blatant. I hope these refs aren't calling the other games. No Player safety https://t.co/e3vV1VSoCp
