Report: Potential Hawks pick Doncic won't work out for teams before NBA draft

The Atlanta Hawks could have a major decision on their hands in next month's draft, if Doncic -- a top-5-pick candidate -- doesn't submit to personal workouts for NBA clubs.

ATLANTA -- The Hawks could be flying blind with their lottery pick in the upcoming NBA draft, if they truly covet Slovenia teenager Luka Doncic above the cavalcade of American-born stars.

Bill Duffy, the agent for Doncic, a playmaking point guard with great size (6-foot-6), revealed this week his client won't work out for any NBA teams prior to the June 21 draft, citing a hectic schedule which includes a professional league commitment to Real Madrid in Europe; and who could blame Doncic for taking such a tack?

Through May 2, the 19-year-old Doncic has averaged 14.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists for Real Madrid, against top-notch competition, while showcasing a maturity to his game that's rarely found in teenagers.

A gifted passer with versatile athleticism, Doncic often draws comparisons to longtime San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili.

The May 14 lottery drawing will determine the Hawks' standing for the draft. Right now, Atlanta has the best odds of capturing the No. 4 overall pick, which would certainly qualify as Doncic territory, along with Arizona center DeAndre Ayton, Duke power forward Marvin Bagley III, Missouri small forward Michael Porter, Duke center Wendell Carter and Michigan State forward Jaren Jackson Jr.

Flush with so many viable options at the top, some NBA teams may avoid the Doncic uncertainty altogether come June, if the kid follows through on Duffy's agent promise to circumvent personal workouts.

It's also worth mentioning: The above list doesn't cover the biggest wild card of the draft, Oklahoma sharpshooter Trae Young, who may represent this decade's closest thing to two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry, in terms of scoring ability, shooting acumen from 23 feet and beyond and general 'Wow' factor.
