Vince Lombardi Trophy arrives in Atlanta

The Vince Lombardi Trophy will remain on display at the Super Bowl Experience all week long.

ATLANTA — The Vince Lombardi Trophy, which is awarded to the Super Bowl champion, arrived at the Super Bowl Experience in downtown Atlanta Saturday morning.

The event kicks off the beginning of Super Bowl week, ahead of Super Bowl LIII, on Sunday, February 3, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The trophy was brought in by FedEx truck and carried to its display platform by Super Bowl XL Champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerome 'The Bus' Bettis.

Bettis was joined by Freddie the Falcon, the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders and the Martin Luther King Jr. High School Pep Band.

After Bettis retired from the Pittsburgh Steelers, he moved to Georgia and now lives in metro Atlanta.

Fans will be able to walk up and get a close look at the Vince Lombardi Trophy all week at the Super Bowl Experience at the Georgia World Congress Center. They'll also be able to get their photos taken with the trophy.

The trophy is named for the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers during Super Bowl I and II, Vince Lombardi.

The Lombardi Trophy is made of sterling silver. It stands 22 inches tall, weighs 7 pounds and depicts a football in a kicking position on a three-sided stand.

The trophy was originally designed by Tiffany vice president Oscar Riedner on a cocktail napkin during a 1966 lunch with then-NFL Commissioner Pete Roselle.

It was first awarded to the Packers after the first AFL-NFL World Championship Game -- which is what the first Super Bowl was called at the time. The trophy was renamed in 1970, following Lombardi's death from cancer.

Unlike cumulative trophies like the NHL's Stanley Cup and the CFL's Grey Cup, a new Lombardi Trophy is crafted each year and the winning team maintains permanent possession of the trophy.

The sole exception to this is the trophy won by the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl V. That trophy was retained by the city of Baltimore as part of the legal settlement when the team moved to Indianapolis in 1984.

Since then, both the Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens have won Lombardi Trophies of their own as a result of Super Bowl victories.
