Atlanta mayor competes with Portland mayor in friendly bet over MLS Cup Final

Atlanta United will take on Portland Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Mercedes Benz Stadium.

ATLANTA — The battle is on! Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler challenged Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms with a friendly wager over the MLS Cup Final.

Atlanta United will take on Portland  Saturday at the Mercedes Benz Stadium.

Wheeler tweeted a video Saturday morning suggesting the friendly bet.

"I have to say, we already know what the outcome of the game's going to be," Wheeler said. "You might remember our Timbers won the MLS Cup three years ago."

If Portland wins, he suggested Mayor Bottoms wear a Timbers jersey for a day. She would have to record a video congratulating the team.

"And if you win, I'll do the same for United," Wheeler said.

Bottoms accepted the challenge!

"Atlanta is looking forward to welcoming the Portland Timbers to our city, but you should know that we will be sending them back with a big fat 'L'," she said in a video she tweeted.

It's been 23 years and 41 days since an Atlanta sports team won a major professional championship game, but that could all change if Atlanta United wins.

Bottoms is confident that the Timbers will lose. She even ended the video asking Wheeler what size they should send him for his jersey.

The game begins at 8 p.m.
