Mercedes-Benz Stadium shatters attendance record for MLS All-Star Game

The MLS All-Star Game's old attendance record—70,728 at Houston's Reliant Stadium—actually stood for eight years.

ATLANTA—At this rate, the year-old Mercedes-Benz Stadium will own every noteworthy attendance mark in the MLS record book.

On Tuesday, Mercedes-Benz Stadium set a new league record for the MLS All-Star Game, attracting 72,317 fans to Atlanta United's vaunted home venue.

The news comes just a few days after MB Stadium established a new attendance threshold for an MLS regular-season game. That record has been eclipsed a few times this season in Atlanta.

The old All-Star record—70,728 at Houston's Reliant Stadium—actually stood for eight years.

Technically, the 1996 MLS All-Star Game at old Giants Stadium in New York/New Jersey established the ASG record of 78,416.

Back then, however, the All-Star Game was part of a doubleheader, with the other match featuring famous club teams from overseas.

In essence, Tuesday's record-setting outing includes only standalone events for All-Star Game competition.
