WATCH: Dawsonville native Chase Elliott endures two fiery crashes at Daytona 500

The final 10 laps of this year's Great American Race were full of chain-reaction crashes, caution flags and stoppages of action.

Chase Elliott wasn't a serious candidate for Victory Lane during Sunday's running of the Daytona 500, taking 17th place overall.

However, let's give the Dawsonville native credit for enduring two harrowing crashes within the final 10 laps ... and still reaching the finish line, in passable condition.

The first crash, which will ultimately define this year's Great American Race, swallowed up 18 cars in its wake and produced a sustained fiery visual that has seldom been replicated in previous years.

A few laps later, following the first complete stoppage, another fiery crash thwarted the victory odds of seven more drivers ... and it might have been eight, if Elliott hadn't created just enough separation from the other crash victims.

The downside of such craziness? The double stoppages made the final two laps somewhat anti-climactic, with veteran Denny Hamlin collecting his first-ever Daytona 500 victory.
