Child dies after being ejected in crash on Downtown Connector

Several lanes are blocked in the area.

ATLANTA — Police say a girl has been killed in an accident on one of Atlanta's busiest thoroughfares late Monday evening.

The Georgia State Patrol, which is handling the investigation, said that the accident happened on I-85 north near 17th Street. A state trooper arrived to find a Ford Ranger which had overturned in one of the lanes.

The trooper saw that a juvenile female had been ejected and was already unresponsive. According to the initial narrative from the GSP, the trooper then began trying to help the child until an ambulance arrived. She was then taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment but didn't survive her injuries.

Others in the vehicle were also taken to Grady but their injuries were described as "non-life-threatening."

The Ranger was the only vehicle involved in the crash and further details of how it happened are not yet available. The Georgia State Patrol and Atlanta Police are both

Earlier in the evening, the Georgia Department of Transportation reported all lanes of I-85 northbound at Buford Highway were blocked including the HOV lane. Nearby, the I-75 ramp southbound to I-85 northbound also had a single lane blocked.

Both sections of the roadway have since been reopened.

The Georgia State Patrol said that the Atlanta Police Department is investigating the crash; though, Atlanta Police initially said it was being handled by the state patrol.

11Alive will provide updates on the accident when they become available.
