Driver flips, ditches car after allegedly causing large wreck on Downtown Connector

At one point, the backup stretched from I-20 as far back as Langford Parkway.

ATLANTA — Northbound lanes on the Downtown Connector were left at a standstill for a time on Saturday night due to an accident involving several vehicles where the alleged at-fault driver got out and ran.

Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) data shows I-75/I-85 with all northbound lanes shut down at I-20.  Meanwhile, traffic maps showed a backup with cars sitting at a standstill as far back as the Langford Parkway onramp.

Atlanta Police later updated that the crash, which happened around 9:30 p.m. involved multiple vehicles. Police said the driver of the vehicle which they believe caused the crash ran after escaping the overturned wreckage and seeing officers.

Despite a number of vehicles being involved, police said there were no reported injuries. Now, officers are working to get into contact with all drivers involved.

While police said in a statement they were still working to get traffic flowing again, cameras in the area, as of 11:45 p.m., showed traffic moving and most if not all vehicles on the shoulder.

Police haven't said whether they know who may have been driving the vehicle that caused the wreck or provided a possible description.
