3-vehicle accident on Downtown Connector leaves one dead

Police are still trying to determine how the crash happened.

ATLANTA — An accident on the I-75 and I-85 Downtown Connector in Atlanta has left one person dead.

Police said the accident happened around 7 p.m. on the Connector near University Avenue and involved three vehicles.

Police arrived to find multiple southbound lanes blocked by the crash, which forced police to divert traffic onto I-20 for several hours.

Grady paramedics and Atlanta Fire first-responders ultimately said one driver was killed in the accident. Other occupants of the vehicles in the crash sustained injuries that police said weren't considered life-threatening.

Atlanta's accident investigation unit is now responding to the scene to try to understand the circumstances surrounding the accident. Since then, the Downtown Connector has reopened to traffic at University Avenue.
