Metro Atlanta gas prices sliding toward $2 a gallon and below

If you hunt, you can find gas for less than $2 for the first time in ages!

ATLANTA — In recent weeks, gas prices have continued to decrease across Georgia and the Southeast, with some of the lowest prices in more than two years coming over the last two weeks.

According to Gas Buddy, as of Sunday morning, the lowest prices in metro Atlanta can be found at the Brookhaven and Cumberland Costco stores at $1.89 per gallon for regular. That price is matched at Sam's Club stores in Morrow and Douglasville.

For those who are not going to membership clubs like Sam's Club or Costco, QuikTrip at Windy Hill Road near US 41 in Marietta was offering regular gas for 1.99 according to Gas Buddy on Sunday.

The Murphy USA and QuikTrip stations at I-20 and Panola Road in DeKalb County were selling gas at 1.92 a gallon on Sunday morning.

Many other stations had regular gas for anywhere between 1.99 and 2.19 a gallon across the metro area.

These prices were not unique to metro Atlanta and being matched elsewhere across the state.

11Alive digital manager Kristen Reed snapped a photo of a gas station in LaGrange of a gas station on Saturday with regular gas for $1.84 a gallon.

According to AAA, prices have continued to fall across the entire nation, which is welcome news to the millions of people who are hitting the roads during the Christmas holiday period.

"AAA expects 102 million Americans to drive to their holiday destinations this year, which is a four percent increase year over year," according to AAA spokesperson Jeanette Casselano.

The national gas price average this week of $2.37 a gallon is a nickel below last week and 26 cents under last month at this point. Casselano says gas prices are expected to continue their slide through the end of the year.
