JUMP e-bikes leaving Atlanta

"We are winding down our current JUMP e-bike operations in Atlanta," an Uber spokesperson said.

ATLANTA — Uber says it's pulling its JUMP e-bikes from Atlanta.

The rideshare giant supplies the on-demand electric bikes and scooters in multiple cities.

Starting Sept. 13, riders will still be able to book JUMP and Lime scooters through the Uber app, but JUMP bikes will no longer be available. The company announced back in January that the dockless bikes were coming to town.

The company didn't say why they were leaving Atlanta, but they did issue the following statement:

"We are winding down our current JUMP e-bike operations in Atlanta," an Uber spokesperson said. "We will continue to offer JUMP scooters and look forward to continuing conversations with city leaders on how we can work together to expand transportation options.”

Safety protocols regarding e-scooters and e-bikes have been a part of contentious conversations with city leaders within the last few months. Several riders have been hurt in accidents - some involving e-scooters have been fatal.

In August, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms imposed a nighttime ban for riding e-scooters and e-bikes at night. The "No Ride Zone" is from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The Atlanta City Council has also passed legislation to stop new e-scooter permits. Any permits granted prior to Aug. 19 are permitted to continue to operate under their original terms until that permit expires.

According to it's website, JUMP was originally founded as Social Bicycles and has been creating the hardware behind some of the innovations in bike share since 2010. In 2018, the company partnered with Uber Technologies Inc. and was soon acquired by them.
