Lanes reopen after vehicle fire slows traffic on I-20

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Crews are just beginning to clear the scene after a vehicle fire on I-20 that temporarily shut down all lanes and kept two to three lanes closed even longer than that.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon along the eastbound lanes near Moreland Avenue. Viewers shared photos of gridlock traffic in the area with a towering plume of smoke rising in front of them.

While the Georgia Department of Transportation estimated that the full accident would be clear around 9 p.m. Lanes were almost completely open by 8 p.m. And at least two had opened much earlier than that.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the crash happened around 7 p.m. and involved two vehicles. Authorities said that, as the responding state trooper was investigating, a fire broke out in one of the vehicles and spread to the other.

According to a spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Public Safety, a total of six people complained of injuries after the crash and were taken to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment. The severity of their injuries wasn't released.
