A woman is dead and her passenger critically injured after an accident involving multiple vehicles - including a boat - on I-75 in Cobb County.
The accident happened on southbound I-75 near the State Route 120 Loop/Marietta Parkway just before 10:45 p.m., Saturday.
Marietta Police Department spokesperson Chuck McPhilamy said that dispatch started getting several different calls about accidents in the area and that a boat was somehow involved. But with conflicting information and locations, crews had to search the area.
"We weren't really sure from those initial calls what we were getting into," he said.
He said that when officers arrived they found a small silver vehicle that was so badly damaged that they were unsure of a make and model and an SUV with an empty boat trailer. The boat was lying in the middle of the road.
The driver of the silver vehicle, identified only as a woman in early reports, was pronounced dead at the scene and her passenger, a man, was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.
The passengers and driver of the SUV were described as being in stable condition though it's unclear if they were taken to area hospitals.
With the investigation still in the early stages, Officer McPhilamy said it was unclear what caused the vehicles to lose control - or what caused the accident in general.
"Certainly, anyone that sees this - that witnessed the accident is urged to contact our department," McPhilamy said. "The more information we can get with the public's help, the better we can recreate and determine what caused this tragic scene tonight."
He added that investigators still aren't certain how the boat was involved in the crash and whether it was the cause or came off of the trailer during it.
Lanes just began to reopen on southbound I-75 around 2 a.m. as crews removed the boat from the scene though it's unclear how long it will take to completely clear the interstate.
