School bus carrying students crashes in Atlanta leaving multiple people injured

This story is developing.

atlanta — A school bus carrying students from Therrell High School has crashed.

It happened at Campbellton Rd. and Childress Dr. SW Wednesday evening. Atlanta Public Schools Spokesman Seth Coleman said all students on board were okay.

The Atlanta Police Department said there were 17 students on board when the bus crashed with a passenger vehicle. However, the Atlanta Public Schools said there were only 13 students on the bus.

"Nine children have minor injuries, and the driver complained of leg pain. All the passengers on the bus are alert, conscious, and breathing," Officer Stephanie R. Brown said.

The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were trapped and had to be extricated, according to police. They were transported to Grady Hospital.

According to a witness, the bus driver was traveling fast before it crossed over into the opposite lane, hit the other vehicle and turned it around.

"I was looking at it in my rear-view mirror," said Van Anderson. "And I was like, 'Oh, God! What?' And it was just 'SPLASH!' ... It was a fast cross-over. No brakes."

Officials have not yet said if speed was a factor in the accident.

Anderson said her brother was the one driving the vehicle and the only thing she could think about was his safety.

"I was crying and running down the street, screaming, 'Not my brother, not my brother'," she said.

Atlanta Public Schools said each parent was contacted individually and that students went home with their parents or via another bus.

In a statement, the school system said, "The safety and security of students and staff is a top priority for Atlanta Public Schools, and we are grateful that all students and staff involved in the accident are safe."
