GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Crews have cleared the scene after a fatal incident on one of metro Atlanta's busiest thoroughfares.
What originally appeared to be a wreck on I-85 near Jimmy Carter Boulevard may have actually been some sort of medical emergency, officials with the Gwinnett County Police Department said Friday.
Officials said the car involved didn't hit any other cars and left the road at a relatively low speed causing very minor damage to the car.
Officers and paramedics performed CPR on the driver as soon as they arrived before they were taken to the hospital. However, the driver was ultimately pronounced dead upon arrival. Police haven't released many more details regarding what transpired that could have led to the driver's death. However, drugs and alcohol were not believed to be a factor.
Given the distance that the vehicle traveled off the road, only two lanes of the five-lane interstate were closed. But, on a Friday, it was enough to cause backups beyond Pleasant Hill Road as early as 6:30 a.m.
