ATLANTA — Passengers of one Delta Air Lines flight heading from Atlanta to Omaha found themselves back on the ground at Hartsfield-Jackson due to a possible mechanical issue, Friday night.
One passenger shared their experience on Twitter after the sudden flight change.
"My flight took off from ATL, made a loud noise, circled for about an hour and now I'm back in ATL," Twitter user @JenJoy wrote. "The fire trucks are now giving us special attention ..."
Delta Air Lines has since responded that the sudden return was due to a "potential issue with the aircraft's landing gear door" that was spotted by the crew of flight 821.
"The crew followed procedures to return for Atlanta and declared an emergency out of an abundance of caution and to secure priority handling from air traffic control."
Delta added that the aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate. Customers were put on another aircraft and departed for their destination after about 11 p.m.
"We appreciate our customers' patience with this situation and we are reaching out to them to apologize for the delay," the statement read. "The safety of our customers and crew is always Delta's top priority."
The specific cause of the apparent landing gear door issue hasn't been released.
