FAA: Error messages reported with certain aircraft navigation systems

Despite this, the FAA said that the planes reporting the problem were never at risk.

ATLANTA — The Federal Aviation Administration confirms multiple reports of an issue with specific aircraft navigation systems.

According to the FAA, air carriers who fly Bombardier Canadair Regional Jets equipped with Rockwell Collins satellite navigation systems reported getting error messages during operation.

The FAA told 11Alive it is working to determine the cause of the problem, which it believes may have first started as a result of a software update to those specific navigation systems.

The agency said the issue forced several carriers - including Skywest, Mesa, PSA, GoJet Airlines and Endeavor Air - to cancel flights. Other air carries in North America in Europe also reported the problem.

The FAA said that the planes were never at risk because the agency tracks all flights on radar in addition to the the on-board navigation systems.

"So, airborne aircraft are under continuous surveillance by air traffic control," a the agency said.

The FAA said no flights were diverted because of the issue, though they noted diversions that happened this weekend were likely due to heavy rains that drenched the metro area.
