Fire crews battle late-night blaze under I-85 near infamous collapse

The fire was brought under control quickly, but traffic is still snarled in the area.

ATLANTA — Two years after the I-85 bridge collapse, a fire in the same area gave motorists a disturbing reminder of that infamous event.

11Alive crews and viewers captured video late Friday of flames rising up between I-85 and the Buford Spring Connector just north of the Piedmont Road exit.

Just before midnight Friday, our cameras showed fire crews battling the flames from above and putting this blaze out in short order.

It fortunately never reached the intensity of a similar fire on March 30, 2017 - when a section of I-85 collapsed and one of Atlanta's busiest roads was completely shut down for weeks.

The resulting re-routes caused a traffic nightmare for locals, commuters and cross-state travelers alike.

Friday's fire may not be what we've seen previously, but it still caused a backup for southbound motorists while crews mopped up the scene.
