1. Lightning can be dangerous.

Authorities are investigating a house fire in at Atlanta near the intersection of Hardee Street and Mayson Avenues in Edgewood. Fire crews said the flames broke out during the thunderstorm. They are trying to determine if the fire was sparked by a lightning strike on a nearby power pole.

Also, a Delta flight from Milwaukee headed to Atlanta had to make an emergency landing in Chattanooga after being hit by lightning, according to reports. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

If you see lightning associated with an approaching storm, seek shelter immediately.

2. Heavy rain can sometimes cause landslides.

A landslide is the movement of mass rock, debris or earth down a slope, usually caused rain, snowmelt, erosion or other factors, according to the US Geological Survey. They sometimes carry debris with them, and can pose a danger to things in the path.

That was true, Tuesday, when Floyd County Police said Silver Hill Road had to be closed because of a landslide.

3. Trees could fall down blocking roadways or damage structures

Arborists suggest homeowners take a good look at the trees in their yards, especially those that are leaning. Make sure your tree isn't a threat to your property or others around you.

4. Sinkholes could form

When water from rainfall moves down through the soil, rocks can begin to dissolve, creating  underground spaces and caverns, according to the USGS.

5. Floodwater could cover streets

It never fails that days of relentless rain causes flash flooding. Video shows vehicles in water near Armour Drive and I-85 Tuesday afternoon. There was also a lot of high water affecting a bridge in Lilburn on Hillcrest Road.

Officials always suggest you turn around and not travel through floodwater. There's also a list of flood watches warnings you should know about. Click here for more details.
