Anna Ruby Falls closed after landslide

The event ended up closing a main road into the area.

HELEN, Ga. — Anna Ruby Falls in north Georgia is closed until further notice after a landslide crossed a main road to the popular tourist attraction.

The U.S. Forest Service reported on Friday that staff is monitoring the situation and they're asking the public to remain "weather-ready" and avoid wet, muddy trails whenever possible.

Photos of the landslide at Anna Ruby Falls show a section of hill several yards wide that appears to have broken loose from the ground around it and fallen onto a two-lane road. The falling debris also carried multiple trees down onto the roadway.

The roadway itself, according to the Forest Service, is Anna Ruby Falls Road which leads to the visitor center and gift shop.

It turns out the falls also aren't the only area of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest suffering from the weather.

"Many other low-lying areas of the national forest are being impacted by heavy rains, with potential flash-floods, fallen trees, landslides and other hazardous conditions," the Forest Service said in a statement on Facebook.

The twin waterfalls are the result of two streams, Curtis Creek and York Creek that fall at the location on their path to Unicoi Lake - and then the Chattahoochee River.

The recreation area includes a 0.4-mile footpath to the waterfalls themselves, the Lion's Eye Trail for the blind and visually impaired along Smith Creek and a 4.6-mile trail along Smith Creek from the base of the falls to Unicoi State Park.
