PORTLAND, Maine — While we are all physically distant, there is something we all can participate in the next two nights: taking in the full "pink" moon.

The weather looks very cooperative in Maine for good viewing. The sky will be clear Monday evening and partly cloudy Tuesday evening.

It's also a "supermoon," as it turns full less than eight hours after perigee, or the point in its orbit that the moon comes closest to earth. This will be the closest, and therefore brightest, full moon of 2020.

The moon won't appear pink though. The name comes from the pink phlox flowers, which tend to bloom around this time of year.

You may notice the moon will have a more yellowish appearance near the horizon. This color occurs due to the atmosphere's tendency to scatter light. It will appear nearly pure white when higher on the horizon.
