A Flash Flood Watch has been issued for much of north and central Georgia, including all of metro Atlanta, through Thursday morning.

11Alive chief meteorologist Chris Holcomb said a strong upper-level low-pressure system, in combination with deep tropical moisture and saturated soil across the area, will create the potential for flooding and flash flooding throughout a large part of north and central Georgia on Wednesday through early Thursday.

Rainfall will increase in intensity through the day on Wednesday across the region, with additional totals of 2-to-3 inch rainfall amounts common and isolated higher amounts possible.

The heaviest rainfall totals are expected during the afternoon and early evening hours.

Due to the heavy rainfall amounts that we have already received over the past few days, many rivers, creeks and streams are already near or above bank-full condition. Creeks and rivers could rise out of their banks, closing roads and impacting homes, businesses and farms. High water may not recede until well after the rain has ended.

Douglas County officials said Mount Vernon Road is closed near Woodrow Wilson Park due to water from Sweetwater Creek across the roadway. Emergency managers said campers and RVs were being moved to higher ground at the KOA Campground located there Tuesday afternoon.

Floods can happen quickly, with little or no warning. Stay with the 11Alive StormTrackers for the latest updates and any possible weather statements or flood warnings.
