Floyd County Schools delaying classes by 2 hours Friday

The school district said they are pushing the start time back because of the potential for flooding that could create unsafe road conditions.

FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. — Floyd County Schools will be on a 2-hour delay Friday for staff and students. 

The school district said they are pushing the start time back because of the potential for flooding that could create unsafe road conditions. Schools will dismiss at their regular times. 

All afternoon and evening activities for Thursday are canceled. This includes after-school care, sports practices, games, or any other event after the school day has ended. College and Career Academy students from Armuchee High School and Coosa High School that drive to school are to report directly to their high schools at 11:45 a.m. CCA bus riders at CHS and AHS should report directly to their school’s auditorium upon arrival.

"Please be very cautious when traveling on roadways tomorrow," the district said. "If you feel the commute for you or your child seems dangerous, please wait until it is safe to travel to school. If conditions worsen and a change to the school day is needed, we will notify you by 6 a.m. The safety of our staff and students is our first priority."

Although the flash flood watch is expected to expire at 7 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service is issuing a flood watch to go into effect at 7 p.m. It will remain in place until Friday.

Floyd County is one of the areas included in the watch. The potential for locally heavy rainfall will continue Thursday evening. Rainfall totals could climb up to 1 inch, with locally higher amounts possible in any stronger storms. This amount of rainfall will produce significant runoff and flooding of creeks and rivers.

But already, the county has experienced heavy rains that have already closed several roads.
