Georgia Red Cross volunteers head to Gulf Coast ahead of Hurricane Sally

As other volunteers work out West and groups remain on the ground in Louisiana after Hurricane Laura, more are headed to the Gulf Coast.

ATLANTA — From Louisiana to Oregon, Red Cross volunteers from Georgia have been busy and traveling to help those in need over the last few weeks.

“We begin monitoring tropical weather the minute it starts heading out into the ocean,” said Sherry Nicholson, regional communications director for the American Red Cross.

So, now, the American Red Cross in Georgia is focused on Hurricane Sally. Nicholson said they already have some volunteers prepared to go to the Gulf Coast.

"These are neighboring states of ours and we are all kind of in the bullseye,” said Nicholson.

But Hurricane Sally is not the only out-of-state disaster they're dealing with. Some volunteers are already out West providing support for those dealing with devastating wildfires.

“We have about eight Red Cross disaster-trained workers who deployed to Oregon,” said Nicholson.

And about 20 Georgia volunteers are still helping with the aftermath of Hurricane Laura, which hit Lake Charles, Louisiana in August.

“There is still a tremendous need in Louisiana; so, many people can't go home at this point,” said Nicholson.

Nicholson said that while they are spread out, they aren't spread too thin. She said we still have plenty of volunteers here in Georgia.

"We are trying to be good neighbors here in Georgia, doing what we can to help everyone in need-you never know when it's going to be our turn next,” said Nicholson.

Nicholson said that if you want to help, there are virtual options to train as a volunteer. But, right now, what they need most is financial assistance. Just text the words Red Cross to 90999, to instantly make a $10 donation.
