Helicopter flyover stirs up huge pollen storm

Lots of pollen and a sign of what's to come

TROUP COUNTY, Ga. — Were you wondering if the pollen count was high as you let off yet another sneeze today? It's not all in your head - though it might feel like it.

Allergy sufferers, be glad you weren't in the wake of this prescribed burn helicopter at West Point Wildlife Management Area in Troup County. This wave of yellow dust is exactly what you think it is - pollen.

Lots of it.

As the helicopter continues on its way just above the Georgia pines, the clouds of summer's yellow nightmare fuel are seen rising as high as the trees themselves.

Commenters reacted as you might expect, with just a bit of shock and plenty of humor. Some said they got headaches or sneezed just watching the video, which was shared by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division.

One poster even admitted that they held their breath without even realizing it as the pollen wafted on helicopter's downward air currents.

The video has been shared thousands of times and has hundreds of comments. For the internet, it's an oddity. But for the rest of us down here in Georgia, it's a sign of things to come as spring hits us like... well... a wall of pollen.

The pollen count itself is fairly high, already, at 428 - mostly from trees. But it's bound to get higher in the days to come - a lot higher. So, it might be worth your while to stock up on antihistamine and allergy masks.

It may also be a good idea to listen out for the sound of a low-flying helicopter - or risk being stuck in a whirlwind of sneeze-inducing yellow mist.
