5 things FEMA tackles during natural disasters like Hurricane Florence

FEMA is working with more than a dozen additional federal agencies as the are preparing for the worst.

ATLANTA -- All hands on deck as organizations, officials, and volunteers are working ahead of Hurricane Florence.

The category 4 storm is expected to make landfall later this week.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is just one of the government agencies making preparations. The FEMA Recovery Center in Atlanta is also has an intricate role.

FEMA is working with more than a dozen additional federal agencies as the are preparing for the worst.

The response center in Atlanta supports eight states in the South Atlantic Region.

These are five areas FEMA tackles:

1. Provide immediate response such as medical hel and emergency shelter.

2. Home inspections to determine what type of grants victims can qualify for after a disaster.

3. Assistance with cleanup and moving expenses

4. Financial assistance for temporary housing, replacements, and construction costs

5. Funeral costs, daycare costs, and other needs

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency is urging residents here to take this opportunity to remind themselves how to prepare emergency kits and review communication plans with their family.
