Icy spots and black ice are possible early Tuesday

Beware of slick spots and possible delays by morning

Temperatures are expected to fall overnight Monday and early Tuesday into the upper 20s to low 30s across much of north and central Georgia.

With the colder temperatures and moisture remaining on some surfaces, slick and icy spots are possible on roads and other surfaces Tuesday morning.

Icy patches possible by Tuesday morning

The most likely locations for black ice on roadways will be secondary or untreated roads as well as bridges and overpasses.

The 11Alive StormTrackers don't expect this to be widespread.

Temperatures will be just at freezing for a short period of time in Atlanta.  Areas north will temperatures at or below freezing for a little longer.  That could help with any black ice formation in patches.

As a result, Gov. Nathan Deal announced Monday afternoon that state government offices will delay opening until 10 a.m.

“Out of an abundance of caution and following the latest update from the National Weather Service, state government will delay opening for non-essential personnel until 10 a.m. tomorrow,” said Deal. “Our top priorities are to ensure the safety of Georgians and to allow the Georgia Department of Transportation to keep our roads as safe as possible. I encourage those in affected areas to remain off of the roads early tomorrow morning. We will continue monitoring the weather and will provide updates as necessary.”

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement ahead of Monday night's possible slick roadways.

The threats for black ice and slick spots will decrease as temperatures will warm through the late morning and early afternoon hours on Tuesday when they get well above the freezing mark.

Motorists and others are advised to use caution and allow extra travel time overnight Monday and early Tuesday.
