ATLANTA — An overnight freeze warning that had been issued in northeast Georgia counties has now been extended to the northwest counties, even stretching into metro Atlanta as far south as Cherokee County.

According to 11Alive Meteorologist Chesley McNeil, a cold front is sweeping into north Georgia and bringing unseasonably cold temperatures with it.

Temperatures will be in the 30s in many parts of metro Atlanta, and colder in the higher elevations of the north Georgia counties.

Things should warm up later in the day, but the freeze warning will be in effect until 9 a.m.

The National Weather Service said at around 5:35 a.m. Thursday morning that Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Dade, Dawson, Floyd, Gordon, Murray, Pickens, Walker and Whitfield counties had been added to the freeze warning.

Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Rabun, Lumpkin, White and Habersham counties were originally included.

Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. They can also create dangerous road conditions.
