Newnan resident says it felt like tornado 'came through the front door'

Tamarcus Boozer, a resident in the area, described how the frightening encounter unfolded as he watched TV with his girlfriend.

NEWNAN, Ga. — It's impossible to miss the destruction and damage throughout Newnan, following what National Weather Service officials believe was an EF-4 tornado that ripped through the area overnight.

11Alive flew a drone over Robinson Street - one of the hard hit areas - to get a bird's eye view of the debris left behind.

There's extensive damage in neighborhoods east of the courthouse - it's so severe that the power was still out Friday evening.

Tamarcus Boozer, a resident in the area, described how the frightening encounter unfolded as he watched TV with his girlfriend around midnight. They heard the storm warning and she went to get her two young children so they could stay together.

"She goes into the living room to get the kids, they were actually on this sofa where everything is covered up.  I hear her telling the kids to get up, 'come on, come on, come on,'" he recalled. "At this time the rain got heavy. Then she started screaming and when she started screaming, I jumped off the bed trying to see what's going on because I don't feel it. But all of this is already done."

"It's like it came through the front door. Front door is right there on the sofa," he added.

"It just invited itself right in," 11Alive's Rebecca Lindstrom said to Boozer.

"Invited itself in," he repeated. "Scary."

The house was lifted off its foundation and the storm moved it a few feet. When it came crashing down, that's when Boozer said the ceiling fell, too. He was temporarily trapped, but everyone did make it out of the house safely.
