Severe weather moves out of metro Atlanta

ATLANTA — Scattered storms are beginning to develop over portions of north Georgia and metro Atlanta.

While Sunday is not shaping up to be a direct copy of Saturday, any storms that do develop are likely to become strong to severe, according to 11Alive meteorologist Wes Peery.

As a result, the Storm Prediction Center has placed most of the state of Georgia under a Marginal Risk area - a level 1 out of 5 - for severe weather for Sunday afternoon and evening.

5:51 PM | The Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been canceled for Morgan and Putnam counties. It remains in effect for Greene County until 6:15 p.m.

5:27 PM | The Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Dawson and Pickens counties has been canceled. 

5:24 PM | A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Greene, Morgan and Putnam counties until 6:15 p.m.

5:22 PM | The Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Cherokee and Pickens counties has expired. 

5:18 PM | The Gwinnett County Fire department confirms reports of weather-related fires from the National Weather Service.

One fire is thought to have been ignited due to downed power lines in the 1200 block of Lakeridge Court SW in Grayson, Georgia. According to fire officials, a tree fell and hit a service line to a home, pulling the weather head away from the structure. This caused an electrical issue that caused a surge protector to catch fire and melt a small area of carpet inside the home. The fire was out when firefighters arrived and the residence was naturally ventilated to remove residual smoke. No one was hurt.

The second reported fire happened in the 1300 Block of Willow River Run SW, also in Grayson. A tree fell into a high tension power line that runs through the neighborhood. The tree caught fire, but was extinguished by firefighters on arrival. No damage was reported to the power lines. No injuries were reported.

5:13 PM | The Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for Greene, Morgan, Oconee and Walton counties will remain in effect until 5:45 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been canceled for Bartow and Gordon counties. It remains in effect for Cherokee and Pickens counties until 5:30 p.m.

5:09 PM | A Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Dawson and Pickens counties until 6 p.m.

At 5:08 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Jasper, moving east at 20 mph.

4:57 PM | The National Weather Service has added a new Severe Thunderstorm Warning for parts of Greene, Morgan, Oconee and Walton Counties that will be in effect until 5:45 p.m.

At 4:57 p.m., severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from Good Hope to near Newborn, moving east at 30 mph.

4:52 PM | The Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for Barrow, Gwinnett, Morgan, Newton, Oconee and Walton counties has been extended until 5 p.m.

4:44 PM | A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Bartow, Cherokee, Gordon and Pickens counties until 5:30 p.m.

At 4:44 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Fairmount, or 14 miles west of Jasper, moving southeast at 10 mph.

4:21 PM | A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Barrow, Gwinnett, Morgan, Newton, Oconee and Walton counties until 5:00 p.m.

At 4:20 p.m., severe thunderstorms were located along a line  extending from near Dacula to Between to near Covington, moving  east at 25 mph.

4:17 PM | There are reports of hail falling in Lawrenceville. 

4:15 PM | The National Weather Service has canceled the Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Clayton, DeKalb and Henry counties. It remains in effect for Newton, Rockdale and Walton counties until 4:45 p.m.

4:05 PM | The severe thunderstorm warning has been canceled for DeKalb, Clayton and Fulton counties.

3:58 PM | A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Clayton, DeKalb, Henry, Newton, Rockdale and Walton Counties until 4:45 p.m.

A separate warning has also been issued for parts of Gwinnett and Walton Counties, also until 4:45 p.m.

At 3:57 p.m., severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from Lakeview Estates to Hidden Valley Park, moving east  at 25 mph. 

At 4:00 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Lawrenceville, moving east at 15 mph.

3:26 PM | Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued for DeKalb, Fulton, Clayton, Murray, Whitfield, Walker and Gordon counties until 4:15 pm

At 3:24 pm, a severe thunderstorm was located near Mill Creek, or near Dalton, moving southeast at 15 mph. 

At 3:25 pm, a severe thunderstorm was located over Sandtown or 10 miles southwest of Atlanta, moving southeast at 15 mph.

2:58 PM | Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for DeKalb, Fulton, Carroll, Coweta and Heard counties have been issued until 3:45 pm.

At 2:55 pm, a severe thunderstorm was located over Midtown Atlanta, moving east at 10 mph.

At 2:56 pm, a severe thunderstorm was located over Plant Wansley, or 8 miles north of Franklin, moving east at 15 mph.

2:47 PM | Clean-up has continued across portions of metro Atlanta following scattered severe storms that have hit the area over the past few days.

The primary threat from any storms that develop will be damaging wind gusts, locally heavy rainfall and frequent, vivid lightning strikes.
