ATLANTA — A winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of north Georgia.  The counties in the advisory are Murray, Fannin, Gilmer, Union and Towns.  The advisory is in effect Thursday at 1 pm through Friday at 1 am.

Rain moves in early Thursday.  Cold air will also move in later Thursday as the rain moves out.  There will be a period of overlap with the moisture and cold air.

That will cause that rain to change over into snow Thursday afternoon into the evening.

The counties in the advisory could see 1/4 to 1/2 inches of snow on average.

The higher elevations could see 1-2 inches.  We will also watch for some slick spots to develop with anything that does not evaporate before temperatures drop to below freezing.

The metro Atlanta area is not in the advisory.  It is possible that the metro area could see some flurries, but we don't expect any accumulations here.

We will also watch any moisture that is left on the roads that could develop into some patches of black ice late Thursday into early Friday.  We don't think black ice would be widespread, only some patches.  The wind will dry up most of the moisture after the rain moves out.
